Wireless Broadband

Bigpond Wireless Broadband uses Telstra’s mobile network to deliver broadband Internet access without the need for a wired network connection into your home or office. Two options are available.

1. Wireless Broadband Modem gives you easy, convenient access to the Internet. Just run the install CD, plug in the power cord and connect the modem to your PC. There is no need for a phone line, it requires only one power point connection. These plans are designed for EVDO services which are available mostly in capital city CBDs. However, by purchasing the modem shown here instead the service will reach anywhere with a CDMA mobile reception.

From $34.95 a month on a 12 month plan, plus your own wireless modem for $199.

iPOD vs iPAQ

This article is extracted from the September issue of the PC Authority magazine and definitely confirms our position in regards to iPODs.

head to head

iPOD vs iPAQ

The iPod craze shows no sign of abating. The iPod Shuffle resurrected interest at the lower end of the market and Apple have now announced all new white iPods will be colour screen photo iPods. But why spend $598 on little more than a single purpose 60GB hard drive when the same money will get you an all-singing, all dancing iPaq rx3000? They’re about the same size, same weight, same price but one’s an actual pocket PC for your pocket. Maybe we’re missing something, so here’s the pros and cons of each. Which would you buy?

CONNECTIVITY

The iPod connects by USB 2.0 to your PC and that’s about it. It also does Firewire with Macs. But you can get add-ons to connect it to your car hi-fi.

Count’em: USB, WI-Fi, Bluetooth and IrDA. You can connect up to your PC, home network, mobile phone, whatever. And like the iPod, your car hi-fi too.

FEATURES

It plays music and still photos. Wait, no. There must be more. Oh. There’s not. To be kind, we’ll include battery life which claims to be 15 hours whereas the iPaq gives up after just a few hours.

Play music, videos, games, send and read emails, browse the internet, read books, write novels, do your accounts, phone contacts, check the weather, take pictures and view them, oh we’ve run out of space…

STORAGE

Hands down winner – 60GB on tap. You’ll never need more, unless you’re a producer on Triple J.

A very humble 92MB… but $100 will upgrade you to a 1GB flash RAM card which is 20 hours non-stop music, enough for many.

SOUND QUALITY

iPod fans will tell you there’s no match, and it is very, very good.

But set the iPaq up right with a decent pair of headphones (which you also need to buy), and it will blow you away.

COOL FACTOR

Its iconic status is starting to fade with age, but the covetable valye of a pair of white ear buds is still high.

Losing the lovely tiny shiny look of last year’s models might be iPaq’s downfall. It’ll still raise interest if you pull it out in the bar though.

VERDICT: if you’re only ever going to want to play music and show family pics to strangers, the iPod’s your gadget. But if you want to do more with your money, pocket an iPaq right now. And don’t forget that we can supply iPaqs under our PF direct scheme!

VoIP

Broadband internet access is now standard in the workplace and home. And with this increase in speed comes increased opportunities in the ways we can use the Net. One important opportunity is the use of the internet for telephone calls, or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

Voice data is unique to other data when being transmitted over the internet. For your conversation to be comprehensible to your listener your voice must arrive both ‘on-time’ and ‘in-order’. If these requirements are not met your voice will arrive to your listener in a jumbled mess.

For both these requirements to be achieved your voice data must be given priority throughout the pathway it takes across the internet. This means that through every networking device which your voice passes it must be given flow priority compared to other traffic. In this situation only other voice data displaces your priority and that drastically reduces the chances of jumbling.

Already many low cost international calling cards are using this sort of technology and, as backpackers, many of us have taken advantage of it. But now the opportunity to take advantage of this technology in our own homes is nigh. Now you can make a phone call from your normal telephone and pass your call straight through your broadband connection until it ‘hops off’ onto the POTS (plain old telephone system) somewhere close to your destination, providing you with costs a fraction of what you normally pay.
In order for you to start using this system and start saving money off your telephone bill you will need the following equipment: a telephone…voice priority on your network…and an adapter for you telephone.

+ +
Engin offers such a system and resells it to other internet phone companies. Currently Engin only has ‘hop-off’ points around the capital cities in Australia and so you’ll only be able to use your internet phone number for incoming calls if you live in these areas. If you live in the country then you’ll retain your standard telephone line for incoming calls and all your outgoing calls will be made over the internet – all using your normal telephone system. You’ll especially notice the difference if you spend a lot on long distance calls. The table and graph on the right show your savings on a typical phone bill and the graph shows that as your percentage of national calls go up so do your savings. Also, if you don’t mind changing your number to a Melbourne or Geelong number you can save another $41 a month, but your friends might not like it!
