Hi everyone,

How are your computers going? Thank you all for your feedback which has been very helpful in our ongoing efforts to refine the design of our models. Our online survey is still available for those who have not filled it in yet and who wish to participate.

To begin, we’d like to reiterate how PF Systems began and what we aim to do with the business.

PF Systems began three years ago in response to people's increased need to keep their computers going well for both home and business. It also came about to address the large price discrepancy that people saw between city technology prices and country prices. We feel that in some small way we have played a part in the common prices the city and country now sees.

The hardware industry is a tough market and most of the essential computer equipment is now appearing on our supermarket shelves. So how do businesses like PF Systems survive and compete? This can be answered in one word: SERVICE! We are there to look after the myriad of problems home and business users face with their technology and are also there to backup the equipment we sell. If a stocked item which we have supplied happens to fail we’ll make sure you have a replacement for your device in the shortest possible time in order to minimize your downtime.

Also, if you take up a PF Systems Service Contract which was previously only offered to businesses you’ll be assured of a 24 hour response time to your problems. The service contract for home users also includes a free Complete Service with PC-Cillin Internet Security (normal value $149). We are committed to providing our customers with personal service, honest advice and the lowest prices. We would like to thank you all for your support and your loyalty and we wish you an exciting new year 2006.

Digital Home Entertainment

Media Centers were introduced to you about a year ago, in one of our newsletters. For those who have never heard about such things, a media center is a computer for your lounge room which has the following features:

• Watch normal TV as well as HDTV
• Pause live TV
• Record TV shows
• Watch DVDs
• Browse the internet and your local home network
• Play all your music and videos, look at your photos

All you need to add is a set of good speakers and a powerful amplifier to enjoy the digital experience.

The main reason why digital home entertainment has not really taken off this year was the lack of an official EPG (Electronic Program Guide). Countries like the US or the UK have an EPG available for free download that provides you with fourteen days of listings. Unfortunately, Australian television networks have not agreed yet on a standard format. But there is a free version called EPG Runner that we have experienced for the last few months, which has been designed to fill the hole which Microsoft have left in their Media Center 2005 (and probably beyond) platform. It has been working quite well for us. The only disadvantage is that you have to download the guide manually.

With Media Center, you are able to skip commercials, pause live TV, record shows by just clicking on a button and you don’t need to buy a TV program anymore. You can play all your music and display your photos as a slideshow in the background of a party… It is an efficient way to watch TV and is a unit that will control all your digital entertainment and… it’s a very sexy piece of equipment!!

PF Systems is going to have a Media Center available for 2 weeks trial for gold & silver customers interested in experiencing this great device. Once you will have tried it, you will want one for sure…

Digital TV

It’s been a long time since TV first graced our lounge room and longer still since families entertained themselves with books and board games by the candle light. With the passing of the last five or six decades, the wonderment of the people-in-the-box in the corner of the lounge room has diminished and in its stead has come annoyance of ads louder than they should be, flash-ups, flip-downs and product placement.

So it’s no wonder that, in this world of ‘on-demand’, digital TV has been a hard sell. We need to look at what digital TV actually offers to see why this is. Here’s what digital TV can and can’t do:

It can:
• Offer broadcasters bandwidth for multiple TV channels on the one license including space for digital radio channels.
• It offers broadcasters the option of using their channel space for multiple SD (standard definition streams) or one HD channel (up to 1080 lines)
• It gives good support for widescreen formats.
• The sound is clearer and can be broadcast in multi-channel surround sound, optional languages and subtitles.

What it can’t do:
• Offer people in country Victoria all the channels yet; currently only SBS and ABC are broadcasting in digital and the rest will turn on next year.
• Can’t be tuned in on your existing analogue TV. Therefore you will have to buy a digital tuner which people know as the “set top box”.
• Won’t offer any better TV picture than you are used to on your existing 480 line TV.
• Offer on-demand viewing such as IP TV.
• Do the dishes.

So what will you need going into the future of lounge room entertainment? A High definition lounge room display is the first thing and at the moment HD Plasmas start at around $2500. But even then all HD displays aren’t born equal. Numerically, the following formats are common:

Standard Definition or SD: 480 lines
High Definition or HD: 720 lines or 1080 lines

Important to note is that just because your plasma has a digital tuner inbuilt doesn’t mean it’s a high definition display. Currently the SD Plasmas are 852 x 483 pixels and HD start at 1383 x 786. The pinnacle of digital video currently and on the horizon is 1900 x 1080 lines (progressively scanned).

So if you are looking to safeguard your investment buy a display with 1900 x 1080 resolution, or at least get a 720 line HD display. Otherwise there’s no point buying a new TV until 2008 when analogue TV will turn off, and by that time HD plasmas will be a whole lot cheaper…you might even pick up this 102” 1900 x 1080 LG Plasma for a song.

Please email us any feedback or suggestion in regards to our newsletter.

Best regards,

Ben Druitt & Phuong-Dung Hoang – PF Systems
