PF Systems News

Time for some news

  • PF Systems would like to welcome Jesse Watts to the team. Jesse will be helping out with PF Systems repair work and comes all the way from Adelaide. Jesse will also be spending time doing an apprenticeship with Brant Wolf (Coastal Sound and Vision).

  • Windows 7 has just been released on the 22nd of October. Windows 7 has a good pre-release buzz and should see an improvement in OS responsiveness. An interesting move for Microsoft has been the omission of most applications from the new Operating System, such as a mail program. Microsoft sites the emergence of cloud applications such as Windows Live Mail as the reason.

  • Internet wizard: check out our new internet Wizard which drastically simplifies finding the best Internet plan.

Payment methods

PF Systems would like to remind everyone that our bank details have changed as we have been operating under a new ABN since the start of 2009. The NEW bank details are located at the bottom of our invoices so you could update our bank details in your internet banking address book to make sure payments go into the correct account.

EFTPOS VISAAlso, we are now offering EFTPOS and credit card payment over the phone. There is a surcharge of 2% for PF direct payments by credit card.

BigPond Aussie Broadband Internode

Our website outlines the internet plans we recommend for different types of requirements (cheap, good value, performance, transfer, wireless...), and also an overview of plans available from the different providers. You can also have a look at our internet wizard which gives you the real cost per month over 24 months.

Our featured ISP: Aussie Broadband

Aussie BroadbandBack in the old age of dial-up and no ADSL available in Port Fairy, some of you signed up for Westvic Wireless Broadband under the government subsidy scheme. The service is good, it's working, the monthly fee comes out of your account every month... nothing to worry about.
However, you might want to reconsider your options now as you can get more value for your money, and get rid of the aerial on your roof.

At PF Systems, we like to support Aussie Broadband (Westvic's new name) as it is a Warrnambool based and locally owned private company dedicated to providing broadband services to as many Western Victorians (and the nation) as possible. They were the first ones to bring broadband to Port Fairy and provide very good value ADSL plans and also very good value satellite services for people located in rural areas who don't have access to ADSL.

What do we like about them?

  • You are not locked into a contract (if you disconnect the service within the first 6 months, you need to pay a disconnection fee of $65).
  • The ADSL plans are good value. You get a very decent amount of download for your money.
  • The sign up and installation process is super fast.
  • It is a local company specialising in regional and rural Broadband internet.

Christmas Special

For all sign ups before the 31st of December 2009, the connection fee is $0 instead of $79 and you get one month of free broadband.

So now is the time for a change over if you are still with Westvic Wireless Broadband and paying $34.95/month for 512/128kbps and only 500MB, 1GB or 2GB of data. It will just cost you $111 for the modem as the connection fee is $0 until 31/12/2009 and you get one month of free broadband. Plus, in the long run, it will be worthwhile as you will increase your data allowance.

Backing up - Acronis True Image Home

In doubt? Your computer has been acting funny and you're scared that you might loose your photos of all your work for the last 3 months? Are you backing up your data properly?

PF Systems recommends Acronis True Image Home as a backup software solution. Your data including images, music, documents and applications are well protected and can easily be recovered in the event of any disaster.

Use it in conjunction with an external hard drive to back up your data and you will be able to relax and enjoy your computing experience knowing that your data is safe and can be recovered. Acronis True Image Home 2009 is available from PF Systems for $79.85. Customer loyalty discounts will apply. This powerful combo is our recommended backup solution and is a small price to ensure your data is safe.

Acronis True Image + portable hard drive = PEACE OF MIND

At PF Systems, your data's safety is our number one priority and we go to great effort not to loose even the smallest file. However, mistakes happen - as Antonia Balmer of Port Fairy will testify. So you should always backup your important files before giving your computer to anyone to fix as they can not be held responsible for accidental data loss (which has only occurred twice at PF Systems in six years).

Cloud Computing

cloud computingBy now we should have all heard of cloud computing. It revolves around the idea that you should not be responsible for the software/hardware/data. After all, it is technical and often one of life's complications. Imagine if your applications and data could be accessed from wherever or whatever hardware. Having your digital life tied to one machine (for better of for worse) is risky and finally, could be a thing of the past

If you computer was your car, what we are talking about here is a fully chauffeured car service where you don't need to worry about your car's mechanical health or age but just that you are transported from A to B in style. Shifting all technical responsibility is a great idea, in theory, but currently, there are a few hurdles.

Cloud computing comes in a number of different flavours:

  1. Single applications with onsite software: As Google's vision for the internet expands, you'll see the humble browser acting more and more like an operating system. Indeed, Goggle will be launching it's own operating system centered around their browser, Google Chrome.
  2. Single applications with offsite software: much like many of the app's on iPhones (eBay & Facebook)
  3. Full desktop (as a service) where your desktop is hosted offsite: fully backed up and provisioned with the required hardware. Disadvantages are that multimedia capabilities are currently restricted and so for the time being, this version of cloud computing will be limited to office environments.

Many of you already use webmail like GMail and Windows Live Mail, keep photos on Facebook and Flickr and backup your data online using services like Carbonite. These are all good practices and will become increasingly powerful over the next few years. Is the desktop dead? Not yet, but it is more of a gateway to the internet than the glorified type-writer of only a few years back.

Happy & safe computing,

Best regards,

Phuong-Dung Hoang & Ben Druitt
